A letter from Michael Durkin
When I came to Denver 14 years ago to become the new president and CEO of Mile High United Way, I was filled with excitement and optimism about the ability of this organization and our many partners to create a better future for people in need and for our entire community.
I began my career at United Way 30 years ago because I truly felt that this organization has a powerful opportunity to motivate and encourage individuals and businesses to make a difference in the lives of people in need. And I believe we have the unique ability to maximize the collective strength of metro Denver and leave a lasting impression on thousands and thousands of people.
It is with mixed emotions that I announced plans at our board meeting today to leave my position at Mile High United Way in order to move on to a new an exciting challenge for me personally. I have been asked to serve as the president and CEO of United Way of Massachusetts Bay and Merrimack Valley. While I have loved living in Denver, raising my family here, and working with outstanding community partners, I have strong connections to the New England area. I graduated from Boston College 30 years ago and began my career at United Way in Manchester, New Hampshire. I also worked at the United Way in Lawrence, Massachusetts.
As I look back on our work together, I know that we have, indeed, made a significant difference in the lives of more people than I can count. The national United Way movement was founded here in Denver 120 years ago on the notion that we can do more together, and today that ideal is thriving because of the strength and commitment of each of our partner agencies. I will always cherish the many friendships and connections I’ve made here in Denver with community leaders who work so diligently to serve individuals and families in need.
I leave Mile High United Way well positioned for future success in our five-year plan to raise $250 million for our three initiatives. Richard Audsley, currently our executive vice president and COO, will serve as interim president and CEO while a search is conducted for my replacement.
Sincerely,
Michael Durkin
President

Michael,
Thanks for all of your hard work in Denver. I know it will be a challenge to relocate from such a beautiful area, but Boston has its high points as well. Good luck.
